Brentwood, Essex. England. January21, 2010. To find out what happens to discarded household carpets, old jeans or empty bottles, take a closer look at the Ford Focus.
Ford's innovative hatchback is spearheading a comprehensive European recycling campaign, which has created over 300 separate parts formed with recycled material and diverts around 20,000 tonnes away from landfill each year.
Valentina Cerato, materials engineer at Ford's Dunton Technical Centre, Essex, said:  "Ford's approach is guided by its Product Sustainability Index, including sustainable material and substance management.  The index covers recycled materials and the use of natural fibres, which continue to replace plastics in Ford components."
Designed for sustainability
Ford's European Product Sustainability Index (PSI) scores the environmental, economic and social impact of Ford cars - demonstrating the company's commitment to taking a leading role in addressing these issues.
Ford's PSI tracks a total of eight parameters including the vehicle's key sustainability elements:
the use of sustainable materials (recycled and renewable materials)
substance management (including allergy-tested interiors)
life cycle global warming potential (mainly carbon dioxide emissions)
life cycle air quality potential (other air emissions)
Plastic fantastic
Ford's material researchers at Dunton Technical Centre, Essex, develop components from recycled material while ensuring no compromise to quality, durability or performance.
Recycled components in the current Ford Focus include:
Heater and air conditioner housing made from 25 per cent recycled plastics
Replacement bumpers made from 20 per cent recycled bumpers
Interior carpets made from 20 per cent recycled carpet material
Battery tray made from 50 per cent mixed recycled plastics
Wheel arch liners made from up to 100 per cent recycled polypropylene
Air cleaner assembly made from 25 per cent recycled plastics
Fabric seat option made from 100 per cent recycled material
Roof lining, parcel shelf, instrument panel, insulation and sound-proofing materials include recycled textiles
Sources for this recycled material are everyday items as diverse as plastic bottles, bottle tops, computer and TV housings, compact discs, household carpets and even denim jeans.  The noise insulation in all Ford vehicles is made from jeans and reclaimed car seat upholstery.
Natural solution
Ford is also stepping up research into plastics, rubber, foam, film and fabric, to develop more alternative bio-based materials that are functional, durable and cost-effective in order to decrease dependence on oil-based products.  While petroleum and glass fibres are typical ingredients in automotive plastics, Ford researchers are developing all-new materials that include more natural ingredients such as soy flour, hemp and cellulose.  Test results show that natural fibre-reinforced plastics can reduce weight by up to 30 per cent.
Ford material experts are also working with a biodegradable plastic called polylactic acid (PLA), derived from the sugars in corn, sugarbeet and cane.  A plastic part made from PLA can biodegrade after its life cycle in just 90 to 120 days, compared with 1,000 years in a landfill for a traditional, petroleum-based plastic. Ford believes potential automotive applications for PLA include textile applications for vehicle carpeting, floor mats and upholstery and interior trim pieces that are injection moulded.  More immediate possibilities include using PLA for manufacturing applications such as in protective wraps used during vehicle transit.
Allergy tested and approved
In working on the environmental impact of Ford interiors, engineers have considered protecting occupants from potentially health-threatening allergic reactions.
All materials touched by the Ford Focus driver - such as the steering wheel, seat covers and seat belts - are dermatologically tested, while high-performance air filters prevent allergic pollens from entering the cabin.
In addition to the Focus, eight other Ford models have been allergy tested: Fiesta, Fusion, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga, Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy. They have been independently verified by international test authority TÜV.  Ford is the only manufacturer to have its cars' interiors confirmed as allergy friendly.
"Liquid wood" to come
Ford joined a three-year research project last year into a new wood/plastic compound known as "liquid wood".  Early findings show excellent recycling potential as the material can be reprocessed up to five times, with an overall near-neutral CO2 balance.
Renewable resources have a major role in Ford's environmental strategy, which aims to increase further the portion of natural materials in new models.
Currently almost 300 parts are derived from sources such as from cotton, wood, flax, hemp, jute fibre and natural rubber.
Sustainability report
For 10 years, Ford Motor Company has published an annual review of its continual efforts to make the company more sustainable environmentally, socially and economically.  On recycling the report (at ford.com/microsites/sustainability-report-2008-2009) states:
All of Ford's European vehicles use recycled polymers (plastics, man-made fibres etc) and renewable parts, where these contribute to a sustainable material supply and provide a more sustainable solution.
Recycled materials are selected whenever technically and economically feasible.  The recycled materials are evaluated in-house versus comparable virgin grades, guaranteeing that appropriate mechanical properties and the same level of component performance would be obtained with virgin materials.
Ford sets targets for the use of non-metallic recycled content for each of its vehicles, with the use of recycled content increased year by year, model by

The First Green Supergrid In Europe

Source: alternative energy

January 14, 2010. North Sea has a great resource that can be used for the common interest in generating renewable energy sources. Some countries in the North Sea has been available the places with producing renewable energy such as wind farms of Scotland, solar panels of Germany and hydro-electric dams of Norway.
UK's energy and climate change minister, Lord Hunt already have ideas for combined the all green energy source in North Sea countries into a large electrical network that can be used for the benefit of more energy use of other European countries. This green supergrid projects will involves the participation of nine governments of Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden and Ireland and the UK. It will lay a milestone to the oath, European Union took, that by the 2020 they will meet 20% of their energy needs from alternative sources of energy.
This project also has begun working by expanded thousands kilometers of network cables with highly efficient undersea cables and will cost around €30bn.The development of a super network of green electricity is planned to provide 30GW battery for Europe's alternative and clean energy. If the demand for electricity usage is less, then the electrical energy will stored as the work of a giant battery and will be used again when needed. Supergrid also designed to deal with all season or weather conditions that are sometimes extreme.
This green supergrid projects will be the first green European electricity grid. It would also operate as a spine of the future European electricity supergrid. The policy director of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), Justin Wilkes argues If this Europe super-grid is successful, then it would be important element in combating climate change because It would allow large-scale integration of renewable electricity production. EWEA also plans the 100GW wind farms and building interconnectors to accommodate wind and wave power farms in future.

Fisker Automotive secures additional
funding for plug-in hybrids

Irvine, California. USA. January 15, 2010:  New American carmaker Fisker Automotive has secured access to an additional $115.3 million in private equity funding to develop plug-in hybrid cars.
This funding is necessary for Fisker Automotive (www.fiskerautomotive.com) to access a $528.7 million U.S. Department of Energy conditional loan that will, in part, help speed completion of the Fisker Karma, the company's first plug-in hybrid.
The raise comes at a time when capital is scarce, the auto industry is struggling and the global economy is just beginning to rebound.
Starting at $87,900 the Karma paves the way for development of lower-cost plug-in hybrid technology for a second, family-oriented car code named Project NINA.  Project NINA is expected to be built in Wilmington, Delaware at a former General Motors assembly plant starting in 2012.
"Raising $115 million in these times speaks volumes about the value of our business model and the vast potential of plug-in hybrids," said Henrik Fisker, CEO.
Investors include A123 Systems, Ace Investments and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
Fisker Automotive earlier this week signed a multi-year supply agreement with A123 Systems for the lithium-ion batteries that will power the Karma.
"Fisker Automotive selected A123 because of the company's ability to meet our performance needs and rapidly scale to our production volume," said Fisker.  "We are committed to developing environmentally friendly cars that don't sacrifice style or performance.  A123's technology will ensure the Karma delivers."
Designed and engineered in the U.S., the four-door Karma proves eco-friendly cars can still have style and power.  The Karma can reach 60mph in six seconds and top 125mph, yet runs cleaner and more efficiently than today's most popular hybrids.

Renault. Letter of intent on the experimentation of 50 electric vehicles in Reunion

In the presence of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Renault, EDF, GBH (Groupe Bernard Hayot), Total Réunion, GE Money and the GERRI agency today signed a letter of intent on the experimentation of 50 electric vehicles in Reunion together with battery charge infrastructure powered mainly by renewable energies.

January 19, 2010. The letter of intent signed today in Reunion by the six partners mentioned above, under the patronage of Nicolas Sarkozy, marks their commitment to the VERT project (Electric Vehicle for a Technological Reunion), a principal component of the GERRI program (Grenelle Environment Forum in Reunion - Succeeding in Innovation).
The document establishes the framework of an experiment to test electric vehicles and the corresponding charge infrastructures powered by dedicated renewable energy sources (notably photovoltaic). The idea behind the project is to demonstrate that the overall CO2 performance of the electric vehicles in Reunion is superior to that of today's thermal combustion and hybrid vehicles.
The purpose of the VERT program is to test the implementation of a network of charge infrastructures sized in number and charge technique (normal or fast) to meet the mobility needs of a territory with a limited geographical area.
VERT is also an opportunity to test specific electric mobility offers aimed at company or government vehicle fleets and at individual customers.
Lessons learnt from the project could be applied to countries or regions with similar electric systems.
The French Environment and Energy Management Agency, ADEME, will be submitting a file on the VERT project at an upcoming call for expression of interest (EOI).
The partners in the VERT program
Renault
The Renault group, present in 118 countries, designs, develops, manufactures and sells passenger cars and light commercial vehicles under the Renault, Dacia and Renault Samsung Motors brands.
To meet the new challenges facing the automotive industry, both environmental and economic, Renault is improving existing technologies with new generations of carbonefficient engines and by implementing the breakthrough "Zero Emission" program.
Renault will launch a zero-emission range with three electric vehicles in 2011 and a fourth in 2012. This offering will make innovation accessible to the greatest number.
With its partner Nissan, Renault is targeting world leadership in the mass marketing of zero-emission vehicles.

Sea Water As Jet Fuel Of U.S. Navy

Source: alternative energy

January 18, 2010. Alternative fuels increasingly sought and investigated as a substitute for the world's oil reserves dwindling. The U.S. Navy scientists are studying the utilization of sea water as their jet fuel in order to maintain U.S. military superiority anticipated dependence on world oil supplies diminishing.
The U.S. Navy is surrounded by seawater and the Navy needs jet fuel. The seawater actually contains carbon dioxide and hydrogen that could be used as raw material to be turned into jet fuel. Better methods are being studied by U.S. Navy researchers by develop a new version of the Fischer-Tropsch process for
combining carbon monoxide with hydrogen to produce synthetic gas (syngas), a precursor for both jet fuel and plastics.
The Fischer-Tropsch process needs to be improved because this process requires high cost and cause side effects that are not environmentally friendly as waxes and the greenhouse gas methane. It also use of cobalt catalysts and heat.
Robert Dorner, the Naval Research Laboratory Reasearchers, want to replace the carbon dioxide dissolved in seawater to replace carbon monoxide, and the use of steel instead of the cobalt catalyst which is expected to reduce the side effects of the 70 percent greenhouse gases methane output and increase syngas output. Then the syngas need to convert into jet fuel. So that it's still need intensive process.
Doner also argued that if this technique is running, then the separate ship must be built to produce jet fuel and serves as a refueling station for the U.S. Navy jet.

Fuel Cells: Sustainability Benchmarks Fuel Cell Emissions Footprints Across Sectors

Source: Fuel Cell Today

January 15, 2010. Fuel cells, long championed as clean, efficient sources of energy, have for the first time been quantified in terms of CO2 and regulated pollutant footprint emissions in Fuel Cell Today's (FCT's) latest Industry Review, launched today.
The Review, Fuel Cells: Sustainability presents a footprint analysis for CO2 and NOx emissions from various fuel cell applications over the next decade. A valuable resource to businesses and policymakers worldwide, the emissions projections are intended as a tool to calculate how fuel cells may contribute to worldwide efforts to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets as well as address local air pollution concerns.
FCT's proprietary forecasts reveal that for some applications, the carbon and criteria pollutant reduction potential of fuel cells at point of use is impressive. Light duty vehicles, materials handling, and buses (which use pure hydrogen fuel) emit only water vapour. Applications which require the reformation of a carbon-based fuel, such as combined heat and power, have the advantage of significant efficiency gains over traditional technologies and as such offer reduced-carbon heat and energy.
Fuel cells are one of a number of technologies being developed that can help countries meet long-term climate change targets without asking consumers to undertake significant lifestyle changes. An advantage of fuel cell technology is that it may contribute to CO2 emissions reduction across a number of sectors including energy supply, industry, and transportation. In addition to CO2 reduction, fuel cells also can considerably reduce SOx, NOx, particulate matter (PM) and noise emissions in various applications.
Commenting on the findings of Fuel Cells: Sustainability, Principal Analyst Dr. Kerry-Ann Adamson said: "we look at CO2 and NOx emissions at point of use for fuel cells in various applications, and reveal that fuel cells in transport and stationary applications offer significant point of use emissions reduction potential. Scaling this up with our ten year shipment forecasts, the environmental footprint of fuel cell technology is considerably lower than conventional technologies, in addition to the higher efficiencies that fuel cells offer."

The Honeoye Falls employees supported Team Gear Freeze in the competition by grilling them on the operation of their robot model, appropriately named The Pumpinator, during a panel session. When asked what the students planned to do with the water by-product of their fuel cell model, the students articulated a well-engineered plan to redirect the water as windshield fluid.
The Honeoye Falls team was credited for helping to stretch student thinking in preparation for the challenging rounds of competition and questions. Gary Stottler, Mary Neelin, Barb Moore, Pam VeCasey, Brian McMurrough, and Paul Shoytush are GM panel members supporting the team.

Fortnightly NEWSLETTER January 20 2010

Hello and welcome to another edition of the
Fuel Cell Today fortnightly newsletter

FCT is in Abu Dhabi this week at the World Future Energy Summit, where we launched our Industry Review, Fuel Cells: Sustainability, yesterday. Following the failure to reach a global emissions agreement in Copenhagen, the emphasis is very much on building low carbon businesses and generating revenue, in other words getting shipments out of the door to customers. The solar industry certainly seems to have realised that the business opportunities in the Middle East are there to be had, as most of the companies exhibiting here are solar companies. There are fewer than a dozen fuel cell and hydrogen companies, about the same as last year, but those that are here seem to be building on contacts made previously and doing good business.
One interesting exhibitor here this week is IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency. This UN body is being set up in Abu Dhabi and its scope and remit is currently being negotiated, and it is hoped that this will include fuel cells and hydrogen. Another notable presence is Masdar, the zero carbon, zero waste city being developed in Abu Dhabi. Progress continues apace on developing this project and a number of fuel cell companies are said to be in discussion with Masdar as well as with Masdar's developers and contractors.
Our launch yesterday was attended by a range of companies from within the fuel cell industry and outside of it. The key message, that the fuel cell industry is capable of creating wealth and jobs worldwide over the next decade while cutting emissions, was a welcome one. However, there is still a process of education on fuel cells for many stakeholders outside of the industry. A key message that came up in discussion was the need for governments to level the playing field so that fuel cells are given equal chance of succeeding alongside other low carbon technologies. The industry, for their part, need to avoid letting the perfect be the enemy of the good and move out of R&D and towards commercial shipments. As our 2010 Industry Review shows, this is something an ever growing number of companies are doing.
The concept of promoting job growth through development of "green business" is a hot topic right now. President Obama recently announced $2.3 billion in tax credits for 183 clean energy manufacturing projects in the US, in anticipation of creating tens of thousands of jobs. Two fuel cell companies were announced as receiving awards. W.L. Gore will use the tax credits to help retool a manufacturing facility, while UTC Power will open a new manufacturing facility. In other manufacturing news, Japanese chemical company Nippon Shokubai reportedly will begin mass production of fuel cell electrolytes this spring. The company reportedly has a plant that can produce 1 million electrolytes a year for SOFCs.
Finally, Ballard has making a lot of news recently, and this week the company had another big announcement. In partnership with Denmark's Danfoss A/S and Dantherm A/S, Ballard acquired a controlling interest in backup power developer Dantherm Power. Dantherm Power already uses Ballard stacks in its telecom backup power units. This agreement means that Dantherm is now a joint venture of the three investors and gives Ballard increased access to the European backup power market. It appears that the CanDan Fuel Cell Initiative, the Canadian-Danish collaboration for early transport, UPS and backup power systems, is bearing fruit. (You can find more on this initiative in Fuel Cell Today's 2009 Denmark Survey.)

Fuel Cell Industry Could Create 700,000 Green Manufacturing Jobs by 2020

Source: Fuel Cell Today

January 14, 2010. The global fuel cell industry could create 700,000 green manufacturing jobs over the next decade, according to the latest Industry Review, Fuel Cells: Sustainability from the analysts at Fuel Cell Today (FCT). The Review will be launched at the World Future Energy Summit Expert Showcase Seminar in Abu Dhabi on 19th January at 11.20am.
The 2010 Review conservatively estimates that the manufacturing of fuel cells will see the most growth in jobs in the next 10 years, with almost 700,000 cumulative jobs created in this time. In line with Fuel Cell Today's projections of unit shipments over this period, over a million total new jobs could be created when fuel cell installation, servicing and maintenance is considered.
In a continuingly uncertain economic climate, fuel cells may offer aid the stimulus to the economies of various countries, and the potential for significant job creation. A potential green route out of recession. FCT's proprietary job creation forecasts are presented in the Review broken down by application and by region together with a discussion and summary of the forecast trends. Job creation forecasts in the fuel cell industry are also compared against those in other sectors, such as wind and solar energy.
The Review, launched this week at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi in front of global business and political leaders, emphasises the geographical variations in job creation. FCT's projections show that over the next decade Asia dominates in terms of manufacturing and the key adopter regions, including Europe and North America, will be the locations for installation and maintenance jobs.
Fuel Cells: Sustainability represents the first systematic attempt to quantify the job creation potential of the fuel cell industry globally over the next decade. It highlights a number of implications for businesses and policymakers concerning wealth and job creation. It also raises a number of issues for the fuel cell industry itself which, if not addressed, could be a barrier to fuel cell adoption, including education, skills and training and supply chain development.
Principal Analyst Dr. Kerry-Ann Adamson commented: "In Europe and North America, there has been a great deal of political focus in recent years on job creation to stimulate economic growth and also to compensate for those being lost in declining industries. Jobs in the fuel cell industry are genuine green collar jobs - manufacturing jobs focused on new, clean technologies. Our analysis shows that as the fuel cell industry expands, many hundreds of thousands of new jobs will be created."
