Renault launches its new website on sustainable mobility
Source: Renault
November 9, 2009. Following the founding of the Renault ParisTech Sustainable Mobility Institute last September, Renault is underlining its commitment in this area with a new website: www.sustainablemobility.org. Featuring web press reviews, interviews with sustainable mobility players and an interactive map showing good practices worldwide, the site is a means for Renault to reach web users interested in sustainable development. Renault has developed a website to promote sustainable development and educate the public on its various facets. The site looks at new concepts such as car-sharing, multi-modality, new behaviours, and "soft" mobility. The aim of www.sustainable-mobility.org is to offer a complete panorama of the studies and initiatives undertaken worldwide on the mobility of the future. The site features news pages, with a news feed, reviews of articles published on the web, and interviews with experts (researchers, heads of associations, scientists, public sector players, entrepreneurs, etc.). It also includes pages with a documentary focus such as "Issue of the Month", which takes an in-depth look at one particular topic. In the near future, the site will gain a "documentary resources" page, a sort of bibliography of sustainable mobility, that users will be able to add to. Last, the "Zero Emission Magazine" page gives visitors the latest news on electric vehicles at Renault. All visitors are invited to contribute to an interactive map on "Worldwide Initiatives", which aims to gather information on the best sustainable development practices worldwide. At the same time, www.sustainable-mobility.org will naturally provide regular news on the ParisTech Sustainable Mobility Institute. In order to reach a broader web audience, www.sustainable-mobility.org is also available in French on www.mobilite-durable.org as well as via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. About the Sustainable Mobility Institute: Last September, Renault, the Renault Foundation and ParisTech decided to found the Sustainable Mobility Institute, at the start of the 2009 university year. The aims of the cooperation between Renault engineers and teacher-researchers and students from ParisTech are to: - promote research into the design of innovative mobility systems, particularly those based on electric vehicles, - train top executives and scientists who, through their number and their skills, will be able to meet the needs of manufacturers in the transportation sector and rise to the scientific and technological challenges involved in developing sustainable transportation systems for the long term.

Electric Cars Recharge Available In Major UK Supermarkets
Source: Alternative Energy
November 7, 2009. The presence of electric cars today intensified by the large automobile manufacturers in the world. This is also supported by the public awareness in protecting the environment to keep green and furthest from the pollution produced by fuel cars. Its proved by the increasing of the electric car sales, particularly hybrids cars sales such as the Toyota Prius that has been ranked first in car sales in japan. But the existence of electric cars would not be an easy solution if the facilities needed by the electric car itself is not yet available such as charging stations. In England, the green earth programs and to support the existence of electric cars, now in every major supermarket has been installed a network of electric car recharging points outside the stores. So that consumers can recharge the electric car while shopping.Shoppers with Sainsbury's can be free plug in their car while they go shopping. Electric cars like the Reva G-Wiz generally have a range of about 70 miles on a full battery and can last up to eight hours for charging. But half past one plugged in to the charging station complete enough for the battery to 80%. The store is billing the network as an 'electric vehicle superhighway', but at the Islington branch they are yet to be used by a customer. Jack Cunningham as the environmental Affairs Manager said it was beginning, when the network was open.It was the aim of the initiative for serve the existing customers that use electric cars. It is also intended as a promotion for the community to be more concerned with environmentally responsible and become a good habit in the future. He believe that in the long term, this type of technology will be very important, so it's important for us to offer this early stage. The recharging points is supplied by EDF, whose electricity the supermarket already sells under its Sainsbury's Energy brand. If the step is large enough, the system will be rolled up to other major cities in Britain. The system is also suitable for manufacture in order to Mayor Boris Johnson's aim of making London the 'electric vehicle capital of Europe'.Mr Johnson said: 'I warmly welcome the arrival of Sainsbury's network... which will put half of all London's population within three miles of a charge point.' Charge points can now be found at Sainsbury's stores in Beckton, Camden, Chiswick, Cromwell Road, East Dulwich, Greenwich Peninsula, Islington, North Cheam and Sydenham. The Wandsworth and Whitechapel branches will get them later this month.

Northern Lights Energy and Reva Electric Car Company (REVA) sign agreement to develop the Electric Vehicle market in Iceland
Reykjavik, Iceland. November 12, 2009: Northern Lights Energy (NLE), the initiator of the 2012 project and provider of infrastructure and services for Electric Vehicles (EV) based in Iceland has signed an agreement with REVA to jointly develop the electric vehicle market in Iceland. NLE will have exclusive distribution rights for the NXR, the new model premiered by REVA at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and consequent follow-up models, such as the sports coupé NXG, which will be launched in 2011. The sales and marketing of the car will commence in the second half of 2010 and customer deliveries at the end of 2010. REVA today has the world's largest test fleet of electric cars, with more than 3,000 vehicles in 24 countries and more than 85 million kms of on road data. The company recently announced a joint venture with General Motors India to provide the electric powertrain and energy management systems for the new Chevrolet Spark and a new 30,000 unit REVA assembly plant - expected to be one of the greenest in the world - is under construction in India. Iceland is also being considered by REVA as a possible site for a European assembly plant. The REVA NXR is a four-seat, three-door hatchback family car suitable for urban driving. Top speed is 104 kph with a range of 160 kms per charge. If using the 90 minute fast charge (normal charging is eight hours), the REVA NXR offers an effective range of 320km a day. A fast charge for 15 minutes will provide a 40 km range. NLE is working on developing a (re)charging infrastructure system for Electric Vehicles and vehicle exchange service to support the adoption of electric vehicles in Iceland. "Iceland is an island and with its advanced electric grid technology using 100% renewable energy in electricity production is a perfect location for zero emission electric vehicles" says Gisli Gislason, the Chairman of NLE. In addition to importing new EV models to Iceland, NLE is also working on developing systems to convert the current internal combustion engine (ICE) car fleet into Electric Cars. "We are working with a number of parties in Denmark and Finland to enable the conversion process of the current cars running in Iceland to support a swift development of the Electric Vehicle market. The mission is to place Iceland in the forefront of countries that uses sustainable energy sources for it's personal vehicle fleet, moving away from fossil fuels, saving billions of ISKs for the society and reducing the 680.000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is annually being emitted by the personal vehicle fleet in Iceland. This is what the Project 2012 is all about." says Sighvatur Lárusson, the Chief Operating Officer of NLE. " "We are very excited about the partnership with NLE. The 2012 project is one of the most ambitious yet achievable transport electrification projects in the world today and we are pleased to be able to contribute our technologies and products" said Keith Johnston, President, European Operations at REVA. The signing will take place at the Indian Embassy, Skulagata 17, Reykjavik, Iceland at 12:00 midday on November 12th 2009. About NLE: Northern Lights Energy is an Icelandic investment company, targeting environmental friendly projects, leading in the field of environmental and renewable energy solutions. Profitable, but in harmony with nature and communities. Project 2012 is an initiative of Northern Lights Energy which has committed to build in Iceland, the first nationwide charging infrastructure in the world, before the yearend 2012. Importing and distributing EV´s in Iceland is a key factor for us to be able to reach our goal. www.nle.is For further information about Northern Lights Energy please contact Sturla Sighvatsson at sturla@nle.is Tel. +354 898 7471 About REVA: 1. REVA is the brand of the Reva Electric Car Company, a Bangalore-based company formed as a joint venture between Maini Group of India and AEV LLC of California and backed by US investors Global Environment Fund and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. Today, REVA is selling, or being test marketed, in 24 countries worldwide and has the largest deployed fleet of electric cars on the market with over 3,000 EVs on the road and more than 70 million kilometres of user experience. 2. REVA's business model includes: electric vehicle design, development and manufacture, electric vehicle technology licensing and electric vehicle manufacturing franchising. REVA develops all key technologies including energy management, fast-charge and telematics systems in-house. 3. European distribution is in the following countries: Norway, UK, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Hungary, Portugal, Cyprus and Greece with other distributors being appointed over the next few months. 4. The company is building a new ultra low carbon vehicle assembly plant in Bangalore, with a capacity of 30,000 units per annum, to accommodate increased production and is planning to introduce even more measures to ensure that it has the cleanest and greenest production. 5. 'Dust-to-dirt' is a term used for the complete lifecycle of a car from the carbon emissions generated in the parts manufacture, assembly, operation and disposal / recycling of a REVA electric car. This is a commitment and the beginning of the process that will take time to determine, starting with the assembly and operation and then extending down the supply chain to tier 1 suppliers and up to second life / end of life. 6. For fleets and institutions wishing to place early confirmed orders with a view to obtaining subsidies, REVA will provide an all-in price including car and batteries on a cash or lease basis. 7, REVA electric cars have no tailpipe emissions. The amount of C02 per km varies depending on a country's electricity generation method. When charged with renewable energy, REVA vehicles are zero emissions. 8. REVive addresses 'range anxiety'. The amount of reserve energy in a battery depends on several parameters including the temperature, usage (that day and historically) and the age of the batteries. The REVA support centre assesses information from the car via telematics (information and communication technology) to calculate the amount of reserve energy available for that particular car. Then, within a few minutes the digital display will indicate 'Revive' and the 'distance to empty' gauge will display the additional amount of range available and the driver can continue their journey.

Govt to unveil 20,000 MW solar power plan
Source: Yahoo! News
November 13, 2009. Mumbai, India. (Reuters) - India will soon launch an ambitious plan to boost its solar power generation from 3 MW to 20,000 MW by 2022, the minister for new and renewable energy said on Friday. "The amount which we are going to talk about is huge. I can only say that much," Farooq Abdullah, told reporters, adding that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh plans to announce its new policy next week. The policy framework, known in official circles as "the National Solar Mission," will address the high cost of manufacturing solar panels as well as the high price of solar power, Abdullah said. A rough rule of thumb is that one megawatt of coal generating capacity costs about $1 million to build, while solar capacity costs roughly double that. "Our job is to bring the costs down. Whether we are going to give concession on import duties, whether we are going to give a sizeable subsidy to purchase solar power, all will be outlined in the mission," he said. India struggles with a severe shortage of electricity, with peak power falling about 12 percent below demand. Rolling blackouts are common and businesses rely heavily on backup generators. The country has set a target to build 78,700 megawatts of new power capacity in the five years ending in 2012, but top officials have said India will fall short of that target. Abdullah said 85 percent of the solar panels currently made in India are exported. "We are unable to use them in the country as prices are high," he added. Indian firms including Moser Baer, XL Telecom & Energy, Bharat Heavy Electricals, KSK Energy Ventures already make solar panels or have plans to do so. Abdullah also told reporteRs that the William J. Clinton Foundation is talking to Gujarat and Rajasthan to set up 3,000 MW solar power units in each

Planetary Society plans new 'solar sail'
Source: Yahoo! News
November 9, 2009. Pasadena, California. USA. The California-based Planetary Society will try again to launch a solar sail spacecraft that would be propelled by the subtle pressure of sunlight. The announcement Monday comes more than four years after the society's first attempt ended up in the ocean when the Russian rocket carrying the spacecraft failed to reach orbit. The Planetary Society says the new project is being boosted by an anonymous $1 million donation. The project envisions a total of three solar sail spacecraft being launched over several years, the first by the end of next year. A solar sail is not propelled by the stream of ionized gas known as the solar wind but by the pressure of light -- photons pushing against a surface.

Planetary Society plans new 'solar sail'
by AP: Yahoo! Tech By John Antczak, Associated Press Writer
November 10, 2009. Los Angeles, California. USA. Four years after its first solar sail ended up in the ocean instead of orbit, The Planetary Society announced Monday that by the end of 2010 it will try again to launch a spacecraft that will be propelled by the subtle pressure of sunlight. LightSail-1 is envisioned as the first of a trio of solar sail craft in a project boosted by an anonymous $1 million donation, according to the space advocacy organization co-founded by the late astronomer Carl Sagan. Solar sails are theorized as a way to achieve long-duration interstellar flight. A solar sail would be propelled by the pressure of light â€" photons pushing against a surface â€" not the stream of ionized gas known as the solar wind. The spacecraft would accelerate very slowly but eventually reach tremendous speeds because of the constant pressure. "It's a low acceleration but it's continuous, whereas a rocket is a high acceleration but it ends quickly," Louis D. Friedman, the society's executive director, said in a telephone interview from Washington, D.C. "Eventually you'll have these missions lasting many years, reaching speeds approaching 100,000 mph, getting out of the solar system in five years instead of 25 years," he said. The Planetary Society's first solar sail, Cosmos 1, never reached orbit. It was launched in 2005 aboard a converted missile fired from a Russian submarine beneath the Barents Sea. The launch vehicle failed and fell into the ocean. The new project will be based on a micro-satellite technology known as CubeSat that was developed to give universities access to space. LightSail-1 will be built around three CubeSat modules. Together, the modules will be "bigger than a toaster, smaller than a breadbox," Friedman said. The spacecraft will launch with its four triangular Mylar sails packaged in a volume equal to about three quarts and unfurl to an area of more than 340 square feet, resembling a giant diamond-shaped kite. It will orbit at an altitude of nearly 500 miles and operate for just a few days to determine if it can be controlled and to measure the orbital acceleration, Friedman said. The mission cost will be about $1.8 million and all funds will come from private sources, he said. LightSail-1 will be built by Stellar Exploration Inc. of San Luis Obispo, California Friedman said the launch vehicle has not been chosen yet. Because of its small size, the spacecraft can "piggyback" on another mission's rocket as long as it is going to the right orbit, Friedman said. The LightSail-2 spacecraft is planned for higher altitude orbits, and LightSail-3 is intended to be sent farther into space. Both missions will be planned to last much longer than the first. The society was not deterred by its previous failure and has not bitten off more than it can chew, Friedman said. "There's always a little bit of arrogance in anybody building a spacecraft," he said. "These things are counterintuitive in so many ways, but you believe you can do it and when we succeed it's incredibly rewarding." The society was founded in 1980 by Sagan, former Jet Propulsion Laboratory director Bruce Murray, and Friedman, a veteran of deep space mission planning at JPL.

KÖLN, Deutschland. 13 November 2009.

Source: Alternative Energy
November 10, 2009. The first solar-powered plane will soon be on trial with the prototype in the water base near Zurich next week, when the weather is appropriate. Its consistent with the Swiss ambition to become the first to fly solar-powered plane around the world. The solar-powered plane prototype has a smaller size of the actual aircraft, and was first introduced in June when assembled in a hangar. The solar-powered plane prototype is expected to be a successful to fly around the world. Prototype flight test was conducted to test the working of the technology applied in the plane and know the characteristics in the control plane that will fly through the night. This aircraft using ultralight high-tech and only single seater. The aircraft wings using Wingspan of an Airbus A380 airliner. Solar Impulse staff said that with the slim design and weighs only 1600 kg, or equal to mid-sized car, so just need 3 knots for the first time on air flights. Expected before next december 20,a few airborne hops down the runway at the Dubendorf air base. Joint founder and chief executive Andre Borschberg said the aircraft was venturing into new flying territory. Compared to its weight and lighter size than the best performing gliders, he said. The prime flight of the plane, planned in Switzerland next year for 36 hours flights non stop. And further will be done by the five stages of flights around the world beginning in 2012.

Ford Motor Company, working with academic researchers and supplier A. Schulman, has become the first automaker to develop and use wheat straw-reinforced plastic in its vehicles. This world-first application, which is on the third-row storage bins of the 2010 Ford Flex, reduces petroleum usage by some 20,000 pounds per year and reduces CO2 emissions by 30,000 pounds per year Ford is advancing a strategy to migrate this bio-based material to numerous other interior, exterior and under-hood applications for multiple product lines Ford's sustainable materials portfolio also includes soy-based polyurethane seat cushions, seatbacks and headliners; post-industrial recycled yarns for seat fabrics; and post-consumer recycled resins for underbody systems, such as the new engine cam cover on the 2010 Ford Escape's 3.0-liter V-6 engine

Dearborn, Michigan. USA. November 11, 2009 - Ford Motor Company, working with academic researchers and one of its suppliers, is the first automaker to develop and use environmentally friendly wheat straw-reinforced plastic in a vehicle. The first application of the natural fiber-based plastic that contains 20 percent wheat straw bio-filler is on the 2010 Ford Flex's third-row interior storage bins. This application alone reduces petroleum usage by some 20,000 pounds per year, reduces CO2 emissions by 30,000 pounds per year, and represents a smart, sustainable usage for wheat straw, the waste byproduct of wheat. "Ford continues to explore and open doors for greener materials that positively impact the environment and work well for customers," said Patrick Berryman, a Ford engineering manager who develops interior trim. "We seized the opportunity to add wheat straw-reinforced plastic as our next sustainable material on the production line, and the storage bin for the Flex was the ideal first application." Collaborative effort Ford researchers were approached with the wheat straw-based plastics formulation by the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, as part of the Ontario BioCar Initiative - a multi-university effort between Waterloo, the University of Guelph, University of Toronto and University of Windsor. Ford works closely with the Ontario government-funded project, which is seeking to advance the use of more plant-based materials in the auto and agricultural industries. The University of Waterloo already had been working with plastics supplier A. Schulman of Akron, Ohio, to perfect the lab formula for use in auto parts, ensuring the material is not only odorless, but also meets industry standards for thermal expansion and degradation, rigidity, moisture absorption and fogging. Less than 18 months after the initial presentation was made to Ford's Biomaterials Group, the wheat straw-reinforced plastic was refined and approved for Flex, which is produced at Ford's Oakville (Ontario) Assembly Complex. The wheat straw-reinforced resin is the BioCar Initiative's first production-ready application. It demonstrates better dimensional integrity than a non-reinforced plastic and weighs up to 10 percent less than a plastic reinforced with talc or glass. "Without Ford's driving force and contribution, we would have never been able to move from academia to industry in such lightning speed," said Leonardo Simon, associate professor of chemical engineering at the University of Waterloo. "Seeing this go into production on the Ford Flex is a major accomplishment for the University of Waterloo and the BioCar Initiative." An interior storage bin may seem like a small start, but it opens the door for more applications, said Dr. Ellen Lee, technical expert, Ford's Plastics Research. "We see a great deal of potential for other applications since wheat straw has good mechanical properties, can meet our performance and durability specifications, and can further reduce our carbon footprint - all without compromise to the customer."
